Insider Tips: Decorating Your Home

It's all in the details...
Today, I am giving you some tips and tricks to help decorate your home.

Mix & Match
Adding old pieces with new, makes your home feel more personal and welcoming.
It's even better, when each piece has it's own story.

 Use Textures
Introduce different texture to help add interest.
(All white decor- makes your room feel even larger.)

 Don't be Afraid
Don't feel like you are locked into a specific style. Make changes often.
My favorite and least expensive way to create change is to repaint!

Let Your Walls Make A Statement
I will forever be in love with wallpaper and beautiful trim work!

Add Drama
A painted ceiling will add so much drama and warmth to your space.

Mix Metals
There is nothing wrong with mixing your metal finishes.

The Power of High and Low
Not everything has to be ordered straight out of an expensive catalog.
Mix items of different price level and craftsmanship.

Bring the Outdoors In
How lovely is it to have plant life in every room?!

Rugs
They help ground your room. Be bold in your choice- pick a pattern or fun colors.

Recover Antique Furniture
Choose a modern fabric to update your antique pieces.

"Spend Where it Counts"
I say this to all of my clients.
Whether that is your dining table, sofa in the living or the entry light fixture.
Spend where you will be most impacted.

Use Furniture To Help Define & Divide
Open floor plans are all the rage, using your furniture to divide each space is a great way to help define the "room".

Hang Curtains High
This helps to elongate your ceiling height.

I hope these tips help you with your next decorating adventure.

Insiders Tip- Painting Mistakes

Painting a wall or a room is one of the most inexpensive ways to update a room.
However, there are many mistakes we have all made with this task.

Playing it Safe & Match-y Match

Be bolder with you color choices- don't be afraid.
Being too matchy- match can sometimes look very put together or very traditional. And sometimes it can look too boring.

Trending Colors

Trends are inspiring and fun- but don't put the color before your own personal taste.

Bright Colors

Although most of us our drawn to bright colors- they do not work for every space.
Especially in tiny spaces- a bright color can be too overwhelming.
Relaying On Paint Chips

It is always best to test the color out on the wall first. Natural and incandescent light play a huge role in how colors look. Do not relay on a tiny paint chip for what the color will look like on a large scale.

Dividing An Open Floor Plan

Painting two tone walls in an open floor plan- can sometimes create an awkward flow. It is wise to make subtle color changes around the room. With accents or by using obvious architectural features.

I hope these tips help with your check project!

Insiders Tip: Ways to Save on Your Kitchen Remodel

Alternative Countertop Material

There is more than just granite out there.
Think about wood or butcher block instead.

Open Shelving

You could save a few thousand dollars by using shelves, instead of having cabinets remade.

Keep Existing Cabinets

Save money by painting your cabinets verses refinishing them.
You can find my tips and how- to's on Pinterest.com to help with your project.

Wall Cut Out

Opt to cut out a portion of the wall, rather than removing the whole thing.

Do Your Project In Stages

Go step by step- do what you can afforded, rather than doing the entire project at once.
Here they have just painted the cabinets and installed hardware. Next they will do the countertops and the flooring.
But what a difference a few coats of paint can do!

Use a Furniture Piece for the Island

Repurpose a piece of furniture for the island- instead of spending money on a new cabinet.

Insiders Tip: A Great Master Bedroom

If you are like me- your master bedroom ends up being the last room on the decorating list, or a hodge podge of left over, unused items.

So I thought this list could help start the ball rollin'- and help get you (myself) on track for a better bedroom.

1. Artwork

Pick something peaceful and calming.
Pictures of your family are wonderful in the rest of your home, but in your bedroom, you want to choose something less emotional- so you are able to rest better.

2. Things You Love

It doesn't have to be an entire bookcase full of items- but a combination of things you love or that have a special meaning behind them. It is also a great place to store those particular items that don't really have a place in the rest of your home.

3. A Great Mattress

This is something we already have, but-let-me-tell-you- it is key!!
We are in love with out mattress!

4. A Place to Sit

A nice place to sit and relax- that is not your bed.

5.Rug

A soft comfortable rug under foot is much more pleasing than stepping on the cold floor.
I know the rug in the picture is a simple plush rug- but a rug can also be a great addition of color and pattern too.

I hope these help to get your master bedroom together.

Insiders Tip: Window Coverings

How To:
Filter Light
Sheer curtains are soft and sophisticated.

How To:
Make Windows Appear Taller & Larger
Hang your curtains at the top of the ceiling, and if you are trying to give the illusion that the window is wider- get a longer rod!

How To:
Trick The Eye
If you have a window that is off center, add curtains to the entire width of the room.
This also helps create a nice back dropped so you can center your bed.

How To:
Faux Window
Create another window with curtains.
Ps. I would have hung these curtains at the ceiling to create even more impact.

Thrifty Thursday: Painted Mason Jars

What you will need:

Spray paint- color of your choice $25
(I prefer Rustoleum products- they have primer and paint in one- which covers great)
Mason Jars $10
(any glass jars or bottles will work)

Here are some of the finished products

I purchased a whole case of mason jars and then I also went around the house to see what else I could paint.

My vision for these painted jars and bottles was to add color and decor to my kitchen.
Before
After

Close up shot

You can see, that I didn't paint all of the mason jars- some I filled with vase filler and others with wine corks.

This large glass container is actually a beverage dispenser that I rarely use- So I filled it will tulle and added it in also.

To create different heights/levels I used plastic drinking cups.
Some I cut down and others I used whole.

Before

After

Close up shot

This large red bottle is actually a wine bottle- so you can see you can use anything!
You can take of the labels if you want to- but kept them on- I was so eager to get started that I just sprayed right over everything, haha.

Each side isn't fully complete yet- I have started saving other bottles and jars that I come across, that I eventally add in too.
I am extremely happy with how this has turned out- it has added so much to our kitchen.
